Sonny Oliphant, a cherished lifelong resident of Neshoba County, passed away surrounded by his loved ones. Born and raised in Philadelphia, he graduated from Philadelphia High School in 1950. He furthered his education at the University of Mississippi, where he showcased his athletic talents in both football and basketball before earning his BS degree in accounting from Mississippi College. Following in his father’s footsteps, Sonny co-owned Oliphant Furniture Company and later became its sole proprietor after his father’s passing. He eventually transitioned to founding the Oliphant Insurance Agency, which he managed until his retirement in 2020.
Sonny was deeply committed to his community, dedicating countless hours to serving as a Boy Scout troop leader, a pee-wee football coach, and a Sunday school teacher. In his later years, he found great joy in participating in the Senior Olympics, earning over 180 medals in events such as three-on-three basketball, the 50-yard dash, and the high jump. His remarkable athletic achievements earned him the Mississippi Hero Award.
Sonny had a passion for basketball and golf, but above all, he treasured time spent with his family and friends. He was a devoted member of the First Baptist Church in Philadelphia.
He is survived by his beloved wife of 74 years, Carol Oliphant; his daughter, Rhonda Oliphant Walton (Lee); his son, Jeffery Oliphant (Kimberly); grandchildren Lena Grace, Makayla, Shadah, Ethan, and Eli; and nine great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Tarris and Vaxti Oliphant, and his sister, Eldora Saunders.
Sonny will be remembered for his kind heart, unwavering dedication to his community, and the love he shared with those around him. His legacy will live on in the lives he touched.
