Barbara Ann Howard, affectionately known to most of us as Bobbie, was a remarkable lady whose intelligence, passion and kindness, not only shaped the world around her in countless ways, but left a lasting impact on everyone she encountered.

Born on September 15, 1943, in Philadelphia, Mississippi, Bobbie spent her formative years there, returning for Summers, Easters and Christmases. Those who knew her felt the love she carried for her birthplace, but Bobbie’s heart was also open to the world—her curiosity boundless, her intellect immense, and her spirit ever-reaching for new horizons. From a young age, Bobbie’s exceptional intellect was evident. By the time she finished grade school, she had traveled to all 48 contiguous states, and knew their capitals, flowers, and state crops. She carried her thirst for knowledge throughout her life, beginning with a diploma from Sacred Heart Academy in Louisville, KY. She furthered her education with a BA from Miami University, followed by a post-graduate degree from Stanford University. Bobbie’s commitment to lifelong learning never wavered, taking her on educational adventures around the globe--from studying at L’Università per Stranieri in Perugia, Italy, to pursuing a fellowship in North Africa and the Middle East. Wherever she went, Bobbie absorbed knowledge with unrelenting enthusiasm, enriching herself and others in the process.

Bobbie’s passion for history and education led her to a 19-year teaching career at Iroquois High School, where she not only imparted knowledge but also inspired her students. She became a force in academic circles, serving as Academic Coordinator and founding the first- ever high school Model United Nations program in Kentucky. Her students were fortunate to travel to prestigious competitions in Boston, Washington, D.C., and Virginia, each trip enriched by visits to Embassies and experiences that left an indelible mark on their lives.

Outside the classroom, Bobbie was deeply involved in her professional community, joining Alpha Delta Kappa, a teaching sorority. She was proud to represent the United States at the 1972 International Conference in Nairobi, Africa, and later served as State President during her 50-year membership. Bobbie's devotion to education and service extended far beyond the classroom, and she became an exemplary leader and mentor to many.

After retiring from teaching, Bobbie’s vibrant personality and love for celebrations led her to a second career as an event planner at the Kentucky Derby Museum. There, her flair for organizing memorable events became legendary, and her dedication to her community continued. Bobbie also volunteered countless hours at Friends for Life in Louisville, offering guidance and mentorship to those in need.

Beyond her professional achievements, Bobbie was passionate about a variety of interests— global politics, opera, NASCAR, and horse racing, to name just a few. She was an ardent supporter of Peyton Manning and the Indianapolis Colts, holding season tickets and cheering on her favorite quarterback with unbridled enthusiasm. Whether discussing politics or sports,

Bobbie’s insights were always delivered with an infectious enthusiasm and depth of knowledge that made every conversation feel meaningful.

Perhaps what Bobbie cherished most in life, however, was her family. Her love for her sister, niece and her nieces children was boundless. Bobbie became known as "The Source" to them: a walking encyclopedia who could provide answers to every question, no matter how big or small, with accuracy and colorful embellishment. She adored them deeply, and her devotion to them was unwavering. Bobbie was a beautiful light in their lives, a beacon of wisdom, warmth, and affection.

Bobbie’s legacy lives on in the hearts of her family, friends, her students, and all who were fortunate enough to know her. Bobbie’s life was a testament to the power of curiosity, passion, and dedication. A very special gift of this day, is also the birthday of Bobbie’s mother — What greater gift than to be reunited eternally with her parents on such a special day.

Bobbie’s spirit and memory will continue to inspire all those who knew her and she will be ever- missed, but never forgotten.

Survivors include her sister, Dale Roggenkamp (James) of Anchorage, KY; nephew, David Roggenkamp (Cindy) of San Francisco, CA; niece, Robin Roggenkamp of Louisville, KY; five great nieces and nephews; and a host of cousins, other family and friends.
