A family memorial service will be held at a later date. Dr. Tommy Lee Latimer, who practiced optometry in Philadelphia for 40 years, died on June 4, 2023. He was born Dec. 10, 1950, in Philadelphia, the son of the late Hugh and Amy Hardy Latimer. A 1968 graduate of Philadelphia High School, Dr. Latimer was president of his senior class, selected to attend American Legion Boys State, and elected most handsome at PHS. He played for the Philadelphia Tornadoes football team and was named All Choctaw Conference and All State. He also attended Memphis State University and played football his freshman year. Dr. Latimer transferred to Mississippi State University where he majored in pre-med and was a member of the Phi Kappa Alpha fraternity. He earned a Doctor of Optometry from the Southern College of Optometry in Memphis, TN in 1982. He opened his practice in Philadelphia and practiced until his retirement due to health issues in September 2022. He was a member of First United Methodist Church of Philadelphia. Dr. Latimer is survived by his son, Brett, of Philadelphia, two sisters, Jane Latimer Perry of Starkville, and Kay Latimer Taylor (Johnnie) of Madden, and many nieces, nephews and cousins. He was also preceded in death by a brother Hugh Wayne “Butch” Latimer.
