Funeral services for Steve Nelson will be held on Friday, June 16, 2023 at 4:00 p.m. from Pine Grove Baptist Church at House, MS with Rev. Rusty Walton and Rev. Lin Chesney officiating. Burial will follow in Pine Grove Cemetery. Visitation will be held on Friday June 16, 2023 from 3:00 p.m. until service time at Pine Grove Baptist Church. McClain-Hays Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. Mr. Nelson, 74, of Union, died Tuesday, June 13, 2023 at Regency Hospital in Meridian, MS. Steve was a native and lifelong resident of the House Community. He was born on October 23, 1948 to Selby and Margueritte Nelson and was married to Barbara Gale Parker on December 17, 1968. He graduated from Neshoba Central High School in 1966 and then attended East Central Junior College where he played football. He completed his BST at the University of Southern MS before earning a Masters in Leadership and Administration at the University of MS, then received an Educational Specialist Degree in Special Education at MSU. He began professionally at Beulah Hubbard as a football coach and teacher, then worked at Union Middle School as a coach, teacher and administrator. He spent 20 plus years at Neshoba Central as a Special Education Coordinator and Assistant Superintendent and concluded his service to Neshoba Central by serving two elected terms as County Superintendent. Mr. Nelson dedicated his retirement to his faith, family and his cows. He leaves a life of service as a deacon and a Sunday school teacher at Pine Grove Baptist Church and a dedicated husband, father, grandfather and farmer. Survivors include his children, Shea Hodges (Scott), Leslie Taylor (Jarrod)and Lisa Jones (Jonathan); eight grandchildren; sisters, Lynn Stokes (Ray) and Sheila Watson (Hanna); and numerous nieces and nephews. Mr. Nelson was preceded in death by his wife, Barbara Gale Nelson; daughter, Christian Nelson; parents, Selby and Margueritte Nelson. Pallbearers are, Ryan Hodges, Tyler Hodges, Parker Jones, Walker Jones, Rhett Taylor, Noah Taylor, Ethan Taylor, Jack Reynolds, Hanna Watson and Jimmy Driskell.
