Peggy Payne Coleman

Services for Peggy Payne Coleman will be held Friday, August 17, 2018, at 4 p.m. from McClain- Hays Chapel with Dr. Dan Howard officiating. Burial will follow in Coldwater Cemetery next to her beloved husband, Dewey Vincent Coleman.   Visitation will be held Thursday, August 16, 2018, from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. at McClain-Hays Funeral Home.  Mrs. Coleman, 85, of Oxford, died Wednesday, August 15, 2018.                             She passed away peacefully into the presence of the Lord and Savior after a long fight with cancer. She was born  July 21, 1933, at Philadelphia, Neshoba County, Mississippi to Clois Ethel Payne and Mary Eunice Tolbert. She graduated from Coldwater High School and was Valedictorian of her class.  She received a Technical Business Degree in Memphis, Tennessee. On her first job at Life and Casualty Insurance Company in Memphis, she met her future husband, Dewey Vincent Coleman, whom she married on October 15, 1953.  She later worked for the Social Security Administration for 30 years in Memphis, Philadelphia, Pensacola, and Cleveland.  She retired to Oxford, Mississippi to watch her beloved Ole Miss Rebels play football, basketball, and baseball as she was an ardent fan. She loved to write poetry. Her hobbies were gardening and making greeting cards on her computer for friends and relatives. She also enjoyed making the Grace Sunday school class yearbook at North Oxford Baptist Church where she was a member for many years.  She was a church pianist for over 70 years playing for several musical groups, choirs, and quartets.  She also taught piano in Oxford to a multitude of students of all ages. Survivors include her children, Patricia Lynn Coleman Stewart (Mike) of Aurora, Co,  Ed Coleman(Brad) of Knoxville, TN, Bryan Coleman (Karen) of Cleveland, MS; four grandchildren, Vickie and Cameron of Aurora, CO, Tara Coleman of Oxford, MS, and Bill Watkins of Sebastopol, MS; and a great-granddaughter, Kristin of Aurora, CO; sisters, Yvonne Payne Cheatham of Franklin, NC, Mabe Payne Turner of Philadelphia, MS, Laquita Payne Edmonds of Mooresville, NC, Jo Payne Walters of Philadelphia, MS, Florence (Weegie) Payne Thomas (Robert) of Philadelphia, Ms, Glenda Payne Gregory (Jimmie) of Louisville, MS, Rhonda Payne Thomas of Philadelphia, MS; brothers, Hoyt Payne (Margie) of Philadelphia, MS, Uhl Payne (Janice) of Philadelphia; and sister-in-law, Rachel Payne.Mrs. Coleman was preceded in death by husband, Dewey Vincent Coleman; son, Kenneth Jeffrey Coleman; parents, Clois and Eunice Payne; and brother, Jack Payne.
