Graveside services for Joseph Allen Hegwood will be held Tuesday, July 21, 2020 at 10 a.m. at North Bend Methodist Church Cemetery with Rev. Ronnie Gomillion officiating. McClain-Hays Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. Mr. Hegwood, 97, of Philadelphia died Sunday, July 19, 2020. Joseph Allen Hegwood was born and reared in Scott County, MS. After living in several locations he moved to Jackson where he lived for many years with his wife, Edna, and their four children. After his retirement he and Edna moved to her old family home in Neshoba County. Most of his working years were with Continental Trailways where he drove a bus. He enjoyed being on the road and received an award for driving over 2 million miles without an accident. He loved living in the country in Neshoba County and taking care of his 60 acres. He went from driving a bus to driving a tractor. He did some kind of work with his tractor almost every day of the week except for Sundays. He was 95 when he finally had to give it up due to failing health. He loved woodworking and many people are still enjoying the swings he made. He was a volunteer fireman in the Bond Community. His job was to drive the pumper truck to fires. While in this organization he worked very hard to get the fire rating up which lowered homeowner insurance rates. Mr. Hegwood was a member of North Bend Methodist Church where he was affectionately known as the “Gum Man”. Volunteering to do repair work around the church, he earned the additional title of Joe Hegwood, MD (Maintenance Dude). Survived by his son, Joe Allen Hegwood, Jr.; daughters, Jan Evans (Ben), Cindy Jenkins (Butch) and Skyla Hailey (Bryan); grandchildren, Sara Pope (Derek), Ben Evans IV, Kelsey Hatch (Robert); great-grandchildren, Ava Grace Hatch, Shelby Hatch, John Wyatt Pope, Charlotte Pope, June Pope, and Emmett Allen Pope. Mr. Hegwood is preceded in death by his wife, Edna Green Hegwood; father, Allen Rush Hegwood; mother, Lela Austin Hegwood.
