Dorothy Dixon

December 19, 1923 — October 19, 2019

Dorothy King Dixon, 95, passed away Saturday, October 19, 2019.  She was born December 19, 1923. She liked to say she was born in The Citizens Bank parking lot, that’s where the family’s house was located. Services for Dorothy King Dixon will be held Thursday, October 24, 2019 at 2 p.m. from First United Methodist Church.  Burial will follow in Cedarlawn Cemetery.  Visitation will be held Thursday, October 24, 2019 from 12 noon until service time at the church. She was the daughter of Hub and Gladys DeWees King.  In 1940, she graduated from high school and graduated from MSCW in 1944.  From there she went to Vanderbilt and after graduating from the Dietetic class she worked at the hospital there.  Later, she worked at Kennedy VA Hospital in Memphis.  She returned to Philadelphia in 1949 and worked as a bookkeeper in the family Ford dealership until she and her brother, Allan King, sold the dealership.  In 1955, she married Ernest A. “Dick” Dixon, who had the Pontiac and later the Chevrolet dealership.  They all sold dealerships in the 60’s.  She and Allan opened an auto parts store and Dick worked at the Bank of Philadelphia until his death in 1972.  In the meantime, she managed the family farm in the Shady Grove community for 40 years as the 4th generation.  She was always interested in farming and served on various farm committees.  She grew up in the First United Methodist Church and joined the church in 1936 and served on many committees. Most of all she loved Philadelphia and knew much of its early history.  She is survived by nieces and nephews, Carolyn King Briscoe (Jimmy) of Jackson; Hub King of Starkville; and Andy King (Susan) of Philadelphia.  Other survivors include great nieces and nephews, Jeff King (Stevanie) of Starkville; Will King (Paige) of Oxford; Ross King (Elizabeth) of Houston, TX; Caroline King Forks (Miles) of Oxford; Leigh Allyn King White (Wade) and David King of Philadelphia. The family would like to express a special thanks to Joyce Cole, Marilyn Davis, Mary DeSpiegler, and Regina Gray for their care and compassion. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to First United Methodist Church of Philadelphia, French Camp Academy, or St. Jude’s Children Hospital in Memphis or your favorite charity.
