Bro. Curtis L. Guess

Services for Bro. Curtis L. Guess were held Thursday, January 18, 2018, at 1 p.m. from McClain-Hays Chapel with Rev. Tom McCurley and Rev. Tim Vowell officiating.  Interment was in Providence Baptist Church Cemetery in Choctaw County.   Curtis L. Guess, passed away at the age of 81, on Sunday, January 14, 2018 at Neshoba County Nursing Home in Philadelphia, MS.  Bro. Guess was born on September 23, 1936 in Attala County, MS to Margaret Louise Martin and Willie Turner Guess. He graduated from Ackerman High School in 1954 and went on to Wood Jr. College where he began dating Geneva Fulce.  Then, he went to Mississippi College in Clinton, MS graduating with a BA degree, Bible Major, in 1957.  He attended New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary from 1952-62 receiving a Master of Divinity degree. During his school years, Bro. Curtis worked on a farm until he was in the ninth grade.  He then worked at Furr's Grocery, Ackerman, MS until after he graduated from college. Curtis and Geneva were married on June 2, 1956 at the Weir Baptist Church Pastorium by Bro. Millington and after 47 years of ministry they retired from Weir Baptist Church.  Through the years, they loved to travel, dine out, and visit family and friends. Bro. Guess accepted Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior as a young boy in the Nazarene Church of Durant, MS.  He joined Concord Baptist Church, Ackerman, MS when he was around fifteen years old and was baptized there and surrendered to the ministry when he was seventeen years old.  He was licensed to preach in 1954 and was ordained in 1956.  Bro. Curtis L. Guess served as a Baptist minister for 58 years, serving in the following churches:1956 Interim Pastor, Concord Baptist Church, Ackerman, MS1957-59 Pastor, Old Cumberland Baptist Church, Mathiston, MS1958-59 Pastor, Montevista Baptist Church, Eupora, MS1960-61 Interim Pastor, Jerusalem Baptist Church, Bush, Louisiana 1962-67 Pastor, Isabel Baptist Church, Bogalusa, Louisiana1967-71 Pastor, Walnut Grove Baptist Church, Walnut Grove, MS1967-71 Pastor, Hickory Grove Baptist Church, Lauderdale, MS1971-83 Pastor, Chunky Baptist Church, Chunky, MS1983-95 Pastor, Pine Grove Baptist Church, Union, MS 1995-2001 Pastor, Weir Baptist Church, Weir, MS2003-2011 Pastor, Mt. Pisgah Baptist Church, Choctaw, MS2013-2014 Pastor, Calvary Baptist Church, Louisville, MS He also loved serving the towns of Chunky, House and Ackerman in the Volunteer Fire Department.  Survivors include daughters, Tena (Steve) Stovall of Philadelphia and Gina (Tim) Mowdy of Newton; five grandchildren, Joanna Pierce (Justin), Hunter Stovall, Morgan Stovall, Trevor Stovall, and Maggie Stovall; brothers, William Guess of Mendenhall, Jerry (Judy) Guess of Caledonia and Davie (Patsy) Guess of Union. He was preceded in death by his wife, Geneva, in 2016. In lieu of flowers family requests memorials be made to The Gideons International or Providence Baptist Church Cemetery Fund.
