Mitchell, 89, passed away at MS State Veterans Home in Kosciusko October 28, 2010. A native of Leake County, he was a graduate of Edinburg High School. He was a graduate of East Central Community College, Oregon State College, and received his B.S. Degree from Mississippi State University where he served as treasurer of the Blue Key Society. He served in the U.S. Air Force for 3-1/2 years in the States and in the South Pacific. As a member of the First United Methodist Church, Philadelphia, he served on the official board and finance committee for 40 years. He was active in the lay witness mission of the Methodist Church. He was past president of the local Exchange Club. He was Philadelphia's VFW Post Commander, and as State Commander of the VFW, was named number one commander in the United States in 1953. He served as chairman of the Veterans Farm and Home Board of Mississippi for nine years. Mitchell was past president of the Philadelphia Country Club. He and his son, Dan Mitchell, won the Father-Son State Golf Tournament in Tupelo in 1971 and 1974. Mitchell was instrumental in the organization of the Philadelphia-Neshoba County Chamber of Commerce. He was a member of the Gideons organization and past president of the Philadelphia chapter. He is survived by his wife of 60 years, June Beall Mitchell; and sons, Kenneth and Aletha Mitchell of Philadelphia, Joe and Glenna Kay Mitchell of Vinton, LA, and Dan Mitchell of Philadelphia. Grandchildren are Dawn Arledge, Marty Mitchell, Mark Lee Mitchell, Steven Mitchell, Amanda Tolar, Holly Mitchell, and Trey Mitchell. He leaves a number of great-grandchildren, Mitchell, Matthew and Dylan Thomas, Molly June Mitchell, Brooke Mitchell, Layton Mitchell, Landon Mitchell, Harly Tolar and Layla Tolar; one great-great-grandson, Logan Thomas; and sister, Ann Poe of Memphis, TN. He was preceded in death by a great-granddaughter, Laura Mitchell; sister, Frances Harrison; and brother, Charles Mitchell.
