DAVID UPSHAW Mrs. Bonnie Jean McDonald, 88, a longtime resident of Philadelphia, died Saturday, November 5, 2016, at her home. Born in 1928, in Kemper County, Jean received her degree in education from Mississippi State University and taught school at East Neshoba, Linwood and Neshoba Central, before retiring after 30 years of service. Jean’s passion was selflessly taking care of her family. She was a great cook and there was always ample food prepared. But, her true loves were her grandson, A. J. and her dachshund, Jam. A close second in that love was her children, which included her daughter-in-law as a child, her nieces and nephews, great nieces and nephews, one great-great-niece, her brothers, sister-in-laws and a host of cousins. Everybody loved to come to Aunt Jean’s house. She had a tradition of having early morning Easter breakfast at her house with no less than 25 people in attendance and she always made sure there was a Bunny Cake for the children. Jean loved her Sunday school class, The Senior Adult Ladies at Sandtown United Methodist Church where she alternated teaching the class with her sister-in-law and best friend, Sue Allen for more years than we can remember. Survivors include her children, Robert McDonald and his wife, Suzanne of Southaven, Marsha McDonald of Philadelphia and her canine son, Jam; a grandchild, A. J. McDonald of Baton Rouge, LA; two brothers, Charles Allen and his wife, Judy and Lester Allen, Jr. and his wife, Yvonne, both of Philadelphia; and nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, and a great-great niece, who felt as if they were her own. Mrs. McDonald was preceded in death by her husband, Pat McDonald; her parents, Lester and Bessie Allen; and a brother, James Allen. Pallbearers were Mike Allen, Randy Allen, Rick Allen, Thomas Allen, Eli Anderson, Brady Anderson, Brian Anderson, Conner Allen and Jam McDonald. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to: The Palmer Home for Children, P.O. Box 746, Columbus, MS 39703.
