CHRIS YOUNGMr. Carrol Woodin "Tex" James, 93, of Philadelphia, died Sunday, August 7, 2016, at Atwood Personal Care Home in Philadelphia. He was born in Aberdeen, Texas and lived in San Angelo, Texas. Mr. James served the U. S. Navy from June 2, 1941 until January 3, 1945. During World War II, he served on four ships, which included the USS San Francisco, the USS Mobile and the USS Abatan. He was on the USS San Francisco during the Pearl Harbor bombing and saw the raising of the flag on Iwo Jima. He was most proud of the service to his country, where he received a Purple Heart during the Pacific Theatre.Mr. James graduated from Angelo State University College of Business, where he received a degree in accounting. He finished a two year degree in 15 months with a 4.0 GPA. He was employed with GTE Southwest, where he worked and retired after 23 years, and then moved to Mississippi, where he met and married Sybil Wade Jackson on August 30, 1984. He worked for Thomasson Lumber Company as office manager, and then left to work for Thomasson Pole Company. He finally retired after working for Boots & More in Jackson, MS. While in San Angelo, TX he taught Sunday school to teenage boys for seven years. After moving to Philadelphia, he became a member of First United Methodist Church. Survivors include his wife, Sybil Wade Jackson James of Philadelphia; daughters, Barbara Carol Anderson of Anchorage, Alaska and Bonnie Louise Halstead of St. Paul, Minnesota; and one brother, Rex Allen James of New Mexico. He is also survived by Mack Jackson; grandchildren, Amy Elizabeth Garner, David Wade Jackson and Hank Davis Jackson; and three great-grandchildren, all still living in Mississippi. Mr. James was preceded in death by his first wife, Barbara Elizabeth James, whom he married on October 31, 1945; parents, Simon Peter James and Nona Ella James; brothers, Gerald B. James and John Ezra James; and sister, Glenna Marie Lewis.Pallbearers are Tom Wallace Cox, David Moody, Blaine Musgrove, Larry Stribling, Mike Tinsley and Cory Vinzant.
