MALCOLM LEWISMrs. Mary Jane Bates Breland departed this earthly plane, with loving family members surrounding her, at 3:25 AM on April 12, 2015.  She was 82 years old. She had stayed active in the lives of her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren until the end, having been at her daughter's home for a family gathering only a few days earlier on Easter Sunday. Jane Breland was born on July 2, 1932 in the Beatline Community. She was the youngest of eleven children who lived to adulthood. Her father and mother were Daniel Matthew "Tuck" Bates and Nettie Carter Bates. Mrs. Breland is survived by 4 children, 5 grandchildren, and 9 great-grandchildren.  She was preceded in death by her husband of forty years, Joe Melton "Pete" Breland, who died April 26, 1989.  Their oldest daughter Joanne Clarke (Stewart Lollar) have lived for many years in Gainesville, FL.   Their younger daughter, Pattie Cherry (Benny) and their daughter Casey Jane live in the House community.    Both sons live in the House Community. Danny Breland (Kim) has two daughters:  Danielle McNeil (Carl) and her three children, Shelby, Logan and Lexi Barrett live in Decatur, MS; and Morgan Hamm (Jeremy) and their son, Brennon, live in Union, MS.  Their other son Randy Breland (Johnanna) have two sons: Joe Floyd Breland (Danell) and daughter Cierra and son Jesse live at House; Shannon Breland (Andrea) and their children, Lauren, Carter and Sarah live in Jackson, TN.  Mrs. Breland is survived by: three sisters Dot Winstead (Arlo) of House, Lessie Williamson of Hattiesburg, MS, and Mavis Smith of Rogers, AK and a brother-in-law, Don Wolverton, also of Hattiesburg, MS.  She was preceded in death by her husband, Pete Breland; four sisters: Mildred Wolverton, Alvie Bates, Iris Sharp (Alvin) and Lunnie White (Jim), and three brothers Sam, who died on Iwo Jima, and Duvie Bates (Sarah) of Beatline and Virgil Bates (Norma) of Bethsaida.Mrs. Breland was much loved by her grandchildren who spent many days and nights growing up at her home.  She was Mamaw to them and Mamaw Jane to the great grandchildren.   Mrs. Breland excelled at many things.  She was loving, kind and generous. She sewed baby clothes for her children, and sewed Easter dresses for herself and Joanne.  In her seventies, she made many beautiful quilts. However, the only skill she admitted to was being a good cook.  At family gatherings, she was always asked to bring fried chicken, since no one else's was as good. She was also known for her cornbread dressing, for her coconut and strawberry cakes, coconut pie, for her fried apple and chocolate pies, her tea cakes and ice box cookies straight from the freezer.   Mrs. Breland was raised in Bethsaida Baptist Church and had been a member of Pine Grove Baptist Church for over sixty years.  Over the years, she helped with vacation Bible School, with the toddlers during Sunday School and church, and was a member of the quilting group for several years.  She often cooked for church gatherings and for church members or neighbors who were sick or had lost loved ones. She was a wonderful woman and will be deeply missed by all her family.Pallbearers were Bill Bates, Dillon Breland, Jesse Vice, Carl McNeil, Jeremy Hamm, Jackie French, Clentis Herrington and Matthew Winstead.
