Margaret "Marge" Teresa Maier Ganaway

July 23, 1931 — June 5, 2012

GRAVESIDE SERVICES:  TUESDAY, JUNE 19, 2012FORT SAM HOUSTON NATIONAL CEMETERYSAN ANTONIO, TX Margaret “Marge” Teresa Maier Ganaway was called home to be with her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, on June 5, 2012.  She is survived by her son, Robert Louis Ganaway and her daughter, Linda “Wendy” Susan Alford, as well as four grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. Marge was born in Salzburg, Austria on July 23, 1931.  Seven years later Austria became the first nation taken by Germany and the following year World War II officially began with Germany’s attack on Poland.  At the end of the War, Austria was placed under joint custody of the United States, Russia, Britain and France.  Fortunately for Marge, Salzburg was occupied by American troops and she had the opportunity to meet American soldiers.  One of them was named Louis Ganaway, who became her husband. In 1953, with her husband and two children, she moved to Ft. Sam Houston.  The family lived on post until 1964 when they moved off base and bought a house making San Antonio their official residence.  But her ties to Ft. Sam Houston continued for many more years, for she worked for the American Red Cross at, what was then called, Beach Pavilion.  She worked for 30 years for the Red Cross, retiring sometime around 1990. Because of health issues, she moved to Mississippi in 2006 to be near her daughter. She was preceded in death by her husband and her granddaughter, Cherie Morris.
